Understanding Hypnotherapy

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process that uses focused attention, guided relaxation, and heightened awareness to help individuals explore thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and patterns that may not be immediately accessible through everyday conscious reflection.

Contrary to popular myths, hypnosis is not a form of mind control, unconsciousness, or surrendering control to another person. In fact, individuals remain aware of their surroundings and retain the ability to accept, reject, or modify any suggestion that is offered. Many people describe hypnosis as feeling similar to becoming deeply absorbed in a book, a daydream, a meaningful conversation, or a meditation practice.

Hypnotherapy simply creates a state of focused attention in which the mind may become more receptive to insight, reflection, learning, and positive change.

What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

Experiences vary from person to person, but many clients describe hypnosis as a state of calm focus and relaxation. Some feel deeply relaxed physically while remaining mentally alert. Others experience vivid imagery, heightened awareness, or a sense of being absorbed in the process.

There is no single “correct” hypnotic experience. Some individuals experience profound relaxation during their first session, while others notice more subtle shifts in attention and awareness. Both experiences can be equally effective.

The goal is not to lose awareness, but to develop a different relationship with your thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

Common Misconceptions

“Will I lose control?”

No. You remain aware and in control throughout the process. You cannot be forced to do anything against your values, beliefs, or wishes.

“Will I be asleep?”

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. Although relaxation is common, hypnosis is generally characterized by focused attention and increased awareness rather than unconsciousness.

“Can I get stuck in hypnosis?”

No. Hypnosis is a natural mental state that people enter and leave regularly throughout everyday life.

“Does hypnosis work only for weak-minded people?”

No. Research and experience suggest that the ability to engage in hypnosis is often related to focus, imagination, openness, and willingness to participate in the process.

My Approach to Hypnotherapy

My approach is informed by developmental psychology and rooted in the belief that every person has a unique life story.

Many approaches to personal change focus primarily on symptoms. While symptoms are important, I believe lasting change often requires understanding the deeper experiences, beliefs, relationships, and developmental patterns that contribute to those challenges.

For example, two individuals may both struggle with confidence, anxiety, procrastination, or sleep difficulties. However, the underlying causes may be entirely different. One person’s challenges may be connected to early experiences of criticism or self-doubt, while another’s may emerge from current life transitions, uncertainty, or competing priorities.

Because of this, I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Instead, I seek to understand the individual as a whole person—their history, experiences, strengths, challenges, values, and goals. This understanding helps guide the hypnotherapy process in a way that is meaningful and relevant to each client’s unique circumstances.

The Role of Consultation

Meaningful hypnotherapy begins with understanding.

Before engaging in hypnosis, we spend time exploring your experiences, concerns, goals, and personal history. These conversations help develop a clearer picture of who you are and what factors may be influencing your current challenges.

This process allows us to move beyond simply asking, “What is the problem?” and begin asking, “How did this pattern develop?” and “What needs to change for growth to occur?”

The consultation process provides an important foundation for effective and personalized hypnotherapy.

What Happens During a Session?

While every session is unique, a typical session may include:

  • Discussion of current concerns, experiences, and goals
  • Reflection on relevant thoughts, emotions, beliefs, or patterns
  • Guided relaxation and hypnotic induction
  • Hypnotic work tailored to your specific needs and goals
  • Reflection and discussion following hypnosis
  • Development of strategies and insights to support ongoing growth

The process is collaborative, respectful, and adapted to your individual needs.

Areas of Focus

Hypnotherapy may support individuals who wish to:

  • Increase confidence and self-esteem
  • Strengthen motivation and goal achievement
  • Address limiting beliefs
  • Improve stress management
  • Enhance emotional well-being
  • Navigate life transitions
  • Develop healthier habits
  • Improve focus and performance
  • Deepen self-understanding
  • Cultivate a greater sense of purpose and authenticity

A Developmental Perspective

At its core, my work is guided by a developmental perspective.

Human beings are continually growing, adapting, and becoming. Our beliefs, identities, relationships, and ways of understanding ourselves evolve throughout life. Challenges often emerge when older patterns no longer serve us or when we encounter situations that require new ways of thinking and responding.

Hypnotherapy can provide a space to explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion while developing new perspectives and possibilities.

Rather than focusing solely on fixing problems, my goal is to help individuals better understand themselves, cultivate their strengths, and move toward lives that feel more authentic, meaningful, and aligned with who they are becoming.

Beginning the Journey

Growth begins with awareness.

Whether you are seeking greater confidence, working through longstanding patterns, navigating a life transition, or simply hoping to better understand yourself, hypnotherapy can provide a supportive environment for reflection, insight, and positive change.

I would be honored to walk alongside you on that journey.
